The experience begins at Lucknam Park’s mile-long drive entrance, lined by beech trees, before entering through the drawing library for evening cocktails. Taking its name from the river which runs through the beautiful grounds at Manor House hotel in the Cotswolds, the Bybrook restaurant has held a Michelin star for several years and is a traditional country house dining experience with excellent food, formal surroundings and world class wines. The hotel itself is a thoroughly relaxing place to stay, located in the picture-perfect Cotswolds village of Castle Combe, with its own golf course, luxury bedrooms and even the hotel’s own honey bees.

Under the direction of its executive chef Ricki Weston, The Dining Room at luxury Cotswolds hotel Whatley Manor has one Michelin star, as befits this top-end country house hotel. Dining here is a real experience with the multi-course Gastronomic Menu, which can be paired with wine flights to complement the superbly-crafted dishes. As well as the restaurant, Whatley Manor has luxury bedrooms, a top spa, a private cinema, beautiful grounds, terrace, cocktail bar and less formal Brasserie restaurant to make sure a stay here is a memorable one.

Hampton Manor, West Midlands
Hampton Manor is set in beautiful grounds and houses the superb Michelin star restaurant Peel’s
When I first visited Hampton Manor the cooking was so incredible I couldn’t believe it hadn’t got a Michelin star. Thankfully just a few months later, Hampton Manor’s restaurant Peel’s had indeed been awarded a star which it has held ever since. It wasn’t just the food which was sublime but the attention to detail, from the presentation of each dish to the combination of ingredients, the wine suggestions and the courses-between-courses which made it such a memorable meal.
Michelin itself says it is ‘one of our most delightful places’ and I wonder if another star isn’t on the cards soon. Hampton Manor itself is a lovely classic-but-modern country house hotel in the village of Hampton-in-Arden and you would never know how close it is to Birmingham Airport as a stay here in its beautiful grounds is a world away from modern stresses.

Hambleton Hall, Rutland
Hambleton Hall overlooks Rutland Water and has held a Michelin star for many years
A stay at Hambleton Hall overlooking Rutland Water is like a lovely, warm, indulgent hug for the soul. This cosy country house hotel has a range of luxury bedrooms and lounges which are perfect for relaxing in and the restaurant, which has held a Michelin star continuously for several decades now, does such superb food in classic surroundings that you are instantly at home rather than feeling overwhelmed. The food here is first class and, as the Michelin Guide says, marries accomplished cooking with top quality seasonal ingredients in a ‘less is more’ approach. Flavours are fresh and clearly defined and the delicious bread is from their artisan bakery. Retire to one of the lounges in front of a warming fire (or enjoy the sunshine and views on the terrace) after an excellent meal and you can’t help but feel that all is well with the world.

Northcote, Lancashire

The Northcote hotel is a lovely hotel located just outside the vibrant and friendly town of Clitheroe, with luxury bedrooms, a team of efficient and friendly staff and a stunning Michelin-starred restaurant, but it is keen to offer its guests more than just a relaxing stay within its walls. Guests are offered the chance to go on a food tour of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for a fun and fascinating afternoon sampling some excellent cheese, gin, beer and local delicacies as well as learning all about the history and geography of the area. In just a few hours I felt thoroughly at home in this lovely part of Lancashire, and that was before we had even enjoyed executive chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen’s sumptuous and seasonal Gourmet Menu which was a delight. In appearance, taste, ingenuity and entertainment it ticked every box, and was served with charm and efficiency by the huge team of staff which made for the perfect evening.

St James’s Hotel and Club, Mayfair
The Seven Park Place is London’s smallest Michelin-starred restaurant
St James’s hotel and club in Mayfair is a hotel serious about its food as it contains the excellent Seven Park Place restaurant run by executive chef William Drabble who worked in some of England’s most influential Michelin-starred hotels and restaurants before joining St. James’s Hotel and Club as Executive Chef to launch Seven Park Place in 2009. In just two years the restaurant won a coveted Michelin star and it continues to offer superb food created with fresh, seasonal locally-sourced British ingredients. There’s a Menu Gourmand with optional wine pairings and from the amuse bouche to the final glass of dessert wine (plus one of the best souffles I’ve ever tasted) the service is impeccable.

The Mandarin Oriental, Knightsbridge
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is a feast for all the senses – and some things just aren’t quite what they seem….
While I’ve yet to stay in the Mandarin Oriental hotel itself, I’ve certainly experienced its memorable Michelin star restaurant, the acclaimed Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. It’s not so much a meal as a trip into the past and future of cooking, where dishes from hundreds of years ago – menu favourites Salagamundy and Frumenty are both from the 14th century – meet with the latest in Heston’s famed culinary techniques. His Meat Fruit is not to be missed while the large and impressive restaurant has views of neighbouring Hyde Park, and the theme of luxury and unique experiences continues throughout the five-star Mandarin Oriental hotel itself.

Ynyshir, Machynlleth
Ynyshir’s Michelin star restaurant with rooms is in Powys, West Wales
Set in the stunning Welsh countryside surrounded Cader Idris and just metres from the Welsh coast and a nearby nature reserve, Ynyshir feels – rightly – like you’re on the very edge of the country. Its remote location doesn’t stop it from making culinary waves and chef Gareth Ward is constantly topping the ‘Best restaurants in… ‘ lists with his passion for high-quality food with innovative ingredients. The multi-course set menu will delight and astonish and make for an eventful and memorable evening. Due to its location it’s likely that most guests will be staying at this charming luxury hotel, with individually-designed rooms and the surrounding countryside making it a beautiful spot to explore.
